He’s the leading, most versatile and most broadcast TV magician in the UK. He’s an Honorary
associate member of the Inner Magic Circle, he’s also an accomplished musician with a Masters Degree from Trinity College of Music and has twice appeared at The Royal Albert Hall.
It was only a matter of time before Max’s comedic mixture of magic, music and mentalism, coupled with his slightly eccentric character, began to ignite the imagination of TV producers and commissioners. After making his debut on Bravo, his big break came when he landed his own prime time Sky One series, Max Magic, during which he bemused and confused members of the general public with a mixture of astonishing magic with hidden cameras and character comedy.
There then followed another Sky One series, Undercover Magic, before Max was asked to consult for a new children’s series entitled The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, a cross between Harry Potter and Alan Sugar. After various meetings with the producers to discuss possible “Sorcerer’s”, he found himself accepting the aforementioned starring role, a role that has earned him huge acclaim and a legion of fans. Now in it’s third series Max has been delighted to mix the different disciplines in magical performance from grand illusion to extreme dangerous stunts. Max assumes the guise of master magician, The Sorcerer, who has thrown open the doors of his grandiose magical academy to 12 wannabe magicians, all desperate to become his next apprentice over a grueling 2 weeks.
Max himself has plenty in common with these young hopefuls. He too
discovered magic whilst still a child, claiming that his passion was ignited after watching Paul Daniels perform a trick in which coins penetrated a table top.
Honing his skills on the streets of London, Max blagged his way into all the top parties from Brit Award Ceremonies to the Buckingham Palace Queens Concert, gaining experience in performance he co hosted the Monkey Business Comedy Club at Marble Arch and was asked to perform at the Magic Circle Centenary Celebrations. And has since had a string of succesful lectures to Magicians societies around the country.
Magic however is just one string to the extraordinary bow of a man whose life story reads like something out of a fairytale. Born Maximilian Liberty De Tolomei Somerset, his father, Edward Beaufort Somerset, was a cousin of the Duke of Beaufort, while his mother, the Contessa de Tolomei, was the daughter of an Italian nobleman. Owing to a variety of incredible circumstances, Max ultimately found himself adopted by a milkman named Mervyn and his wife, Shirley. Learning magic to keep the school bullies at bay, he soon realised that he possessed a natural talent. Discovering a second love in music, Max attended Trinity College London where he received a Bachelors and Masters degree. Such were his skills, that at the age of 24, he was asked to write the syllabus for Digital Keyboard, grades 6-8. He remains to this day a brilliant organist, not to mention Musical Director of the 500 member Emmanuel Baptist Fellowship in North London.
All in all, it’s not difficult to see why Max Somerset has been hailed one of the nation’s most unique performers. Often treading that fine line between genius and madness, his versatility is seemingly without end.
Aside from starring on television, Max’s charm and sophistication - not to mention breathtaking skills that range from close up to mentalism - have made him a highly sought after live performer.
